Metropolitan & Suburban are now set to bring forward 183 homes on the Brunner Road site off South Grove in Walthamstow Town Centre. The plans include new commercial space and significant space open to the public including the first part of the pedestrian/cycle north-south link between South Grove and the railway underpass to the High Street in accordance with the local planning policy.
The site, which was previously occupied by the Essex Brewery, will include 23 family-sized homes, and 25 shared-ownership homes. The scheme also includes three retail units which are projected to result in an increase in the number of jobs on site.
Councillors backed the plans, praising the applicant’s consultation work, saying that the site had been a “bugbear” and that local people were “enthusiastic” about the redevelopment. Notably, the committee complimented the applicant on having made a particularly comprehensive submission.
Howard Wright at Metropolitan & Suburban, said: “We are delighted that planning approval has been granted to allow us to proceed with our redevelopment of Brunner Road, providing a very high quality development with affordable and family-sized homes. We look forward to working with our partners to start work onsite as soon as possible.
“We would like to thank the planning committee for supporting this regeneration scheme, which will help provide the homes the Borough needs, enhance the commercial activity on site, and help kick-start other regeneration in the South Grove area.”
At the committee, a local resident, speaking in favour of the application, cited existing local resident access to new public realm as a key benefit for the local community, along with new pedestrian and cycle links through the site to the High Street.
