Syed Ahmed, a domestic cleaner for the FTSE 250 outsourcer Mitie, has been awarded the Colleague of the Year award at Great Ormond Street Hospital’s annual awards ceremony.
The only winner not directly employed by the Trust, Syed received multiple nominations by the hospital’s Koala ward team for continually creating a clean and welcoming environment for patients, visitors and employees alike.
The awards ceremony, hosted by Davina McCall in London on Thursday 6 June, is held every year to thank medical teams and individual employees for their outstanding work.
Patients, parents, family members and carers are all encouraged to nominate a person or team who have made their time at the hospital that little bit easier. The Colleague of the Year award in particular recognises the people that improve the lives of others working around them.
When presenting Syed with his award, Ali Mohammed, Director of HR at Great Ormond Street Hospital and co-host of the evening said:
“Syed is always considerate of the children and their families, always smiling, works extremely hard at his job and goes above and beyond his duties to help other members of staff.”
Commenting on Syed’s achievement, Rob Cattell, Managing Director of Mitie’s facilities services business said:
“This is testament to how hard Syed and our healthcare team work to protect patients’ health, while ensuring staff have a safe and effective environment to perform their jobs properly.”
A very humble Syed said:
“This is very surprising, and it’s the first time I have won anything like this. I’ve been working here for about a year and I really enjoy it. I see the families as my friends.”
Mitie has been delivering domestic services, including infection control cleaning, to Great Ormond Street Hospital since 2006 and employs over 200 domestic cleaners on-site.
