The mobile social networking market is constantly evolving, and has been forecast to reach 1.5 billion users by 2018. The main driver behind this market growth is the increasing penetration of smartphones and mobile phones that are compatible with social networking applications. Furthermore, cheaper data rates and improvement in the speed of mobile Internet are also playing an instrumental role in driving demand within the mobile social networking market.
Much like web-based social networking, mobile social networking occurs in virtual communities. A current trend for social networking websites, such as Facebook, is to create mobile apps to give their users instant and real-time access from their device.
Recent date suggests that on both iPhone and Android, social networking apps were used most frequently -- approximately 20 times per month -- with news coming in a distant second. In fact, in terms of frequency alone, we're using social networking apps at double the rate we're using news applications, and four times the rate we're firing up mobile games.
Asia-Pacific represents the single largest market worldwide. Asian economies, such as Japan, China, and Korea display higher preference for mobile social networks usage than most of Western nations mainly driven by the large population size, better mobile networks, and cost-effective data pricing.
In the US more than 72 million accessed social networking sites or blogs via their mobile devices in August 2012, a figure that represents a 37% jump from the same time the previous years. Crucially showing that the mobile social networking market is on the up. It has been estimated that approximately one-third of all US mobile users are now accessing social media services, and that close to 40 million are doing so on an almost daily basis.
Due to this massive increase in the mobile social networking market, sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are experiencing a measurable influx in mobile activity. Facebook's US monthly mobile audience grew 50% year-over-year to 57 million in August 2012, while Twitter's mobile user base skyrocketed 75% to 13.4 million monthly users. LinkedIn also jumped to 5.5 million monthly US mobile users, a 69% increase over the previous year.
