On September 8-9 2011 Gothenburg will host a number of international key opinion leaders in surgery, from different surgical specialties. They participate as faculty members at the
1st World Congress on Surgical Training
dealing with the general question “How to educate a surgeon in practical surgical skills?”. This event is taking place at the well known Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre in the middle of Gothenburg.
Most often surgical congresses are focused on a specific surgical specialty, and it is rare to find meetings where specialists from different surgical fields meet at the same arena.
Sweden is often associated with ”quality” and ”safety”. This could be illustrated by several practical examples, as the leading safety principle constructing Volvo cars, and by the fact that the very first national register of surgical results was created by Pr Peter Herberts in Gothenburg in the 1980s (“The national hip replacement register”). Today the national quality registers in different surgical specialties are spread worldwide. In addition, Sweden has established a so called “Zero Vision” for lethal traffic accidents.
In health care systems all over the world the question of patient’s safety is frequently addressed, and some hospitals have been included in the ISO quality system. The questions about Surgical skills and Surgical training are factors of importance when discussing patient’s safety or ISO labelling. The fundamental question at this congress is if a structured learning procedure could reduce the frequency of surgical complications.
Professor Peter Herberts, Gothenburg, wrote about the actual congress the 23/11 2010:
”This contribution to optimize surgical technique is of utmost importance..” and
Dr Richard Angelo, Vice President of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and member of the congress faculty wrote the 30/1 2011:
“You have put together an amazing program – I can’t wait to hear all of the topics discussed. You should be very proud of the fruits all of your hard work has produced! I’m very honored to be a part of it.”
The 1st World Congress on Surgical Training is for the first time addressing the questions about teaching and learning technical surgical skills. The target audience is a mixture of people dealing with these questions in their daily work, being surgical teachers, residents in surgical training, decision makers of educational programs in surgery, constructors of surgical simulation equipments and surgical course creators in surgical instrument companies.
The congress will be officially inaugurated by Lena Furmark, Political Advisor at the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.
We are proud to present the congress faculty with several key opinion leaders in surgery from different specialties all over the world, which will highlight and these important questions. Together with the congress participants they are most welcome to Gothenburg. For further information please see www.surgicon.org.
