News Distribution Service: The Big Tidy Up celebrates its second birthday

Press Release   •   Sep 06, 2010 12:20 BST

Issued by the News Distribution Service on behalf of Keep Britain Tidy

England's biggest-ever litter pick marks its anniversary with the news that it has so far collected almost 90,000 bags of rubbish.

This month Keep Britain Tidy is celebrating as The Big Tidy Up, launched by the charity in September 2008, marks its second birthday.

To date, almost half a million people - from school children, businesses and community groups to members of the Women's Institute and professional footballers - have taken part in The Big Tidy Up, which is designed to help communities come together to clean up their local areas.

More than 12,000 Big Tidy Ups have taken place across England, from Penzance to Carlisle and from Norwich to Shrewsbury, and they have collected between them nearly 90,000 bags of rubbish.

Keep Britain Tidy's chief executive Phil Barton said: 'England is a beautiful country but with a little effort on everyone's part it could be even better.

'The Big Tidy Up has been a huge success since its launch and has really caught the public mood.

'With all the current talk about "Big Society", The Big Tidy Up is one way that people can come together easily and make a big difference to the place where they live, work or study.

'If people are fed up with litter in their neighbourhood and want to make their area better, they should go to www.thebigtidyup.org where they will find all the information they need to become part of England's Big Tidy Up.'
