Press Release   •   Feb 18, 2014 19:17 GMT

Samsung’s new patent applications suggest that the new S Pen will sport a microphone and a speaker.

The first patent application is called “INPUT DEVICE WITH WIRELESS HEADSET FUNCTION FOR PORTABLE TERMINAL.”

Its description:

“Disclosed is a pen-like input device for a portable terminal which can provide the function of a wireless headset. The input device includes a housing configured with at least first and second spaced apart microphone holes formed therein. A transmitting/receiving (T/R) module is disposed inside the housing and coupled to the microphone element and a speaker. The T/R module transmits/receives communication signals to and from the portable terminal. A sound transferring part is provided within the housing to transfer sounds to a microphone element via a plurality of air pathways connected to the first and second microphone holes.”

Its claim:

“An input device for a portable terminal, the input device comprising: a housing configured with at least first and second spaced apart microphone holes formed therein; a transmitting/receiving (T/R) module inside the housing, to transmit/receive communication signals to and from the portable terminal; and a sound transferring part provided within the housing to transfer sounds to a microphone element via a plurality of sound paths connected to the first and second microphone holes.”

The second patent application is called “STYLUS PEN AND ELECTRONIC DEVICE HAVING THE SAME.”

Its description:

A stylus pen for inputting data of an electronic device includes a cavity type cylinder housing, a head, a moving body, and at least one grip. The cavity type cylinder housing has a tip for engaging with a touch screen at one end and the head is retractably installed at the other end of the cylinder housing. A moving body disposed within the cylinder housing and coupled to the head slidably moves depending on a retraction operation of the head. At least one grip is installed such that a portion of the grip is protudes outwardly from the cylinder housing depending on a movement direction of the moving body.”

Its claim:

“A stylus pen for inputting data of an electronic device, comprising: a cylinder housing having at least one grip receiving opening; a moving body slidably disposed within the cylinder housing; a head coupled to the moving body via an opening at the one end of the cylinder housing; and at least one grip disposed within the cylinder housing and selectively protruding outwardly through the at least one grip receiving opening depending on a movement of the head and the moving body.”

If this new S Pen does see the light of day, we hope it is included with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which will make its debut this year.
