North America alcoholic drinks market driven by high growth in Mexico

Press Release   •   Jun 04, 2013 14:58 BST

The North America alcoholic drinks market is suggested to have reached a value of around $213.94 billion by the end of 2011. The United States is the largest country for alcoholic drinks in the North American region, with value sales of $163.56 billion in 2011. Mexico is believed to be the fastest growing country in the region. Mexico's alcoholic drinks market grew at a CAGR of over 3% between 2007 and 2011.

The countries in the North American region are bound by the 'North American Free Trade Agreement' (NAFTA). This agreement allows increased trade between the United States, Canada and Mexico by reducing restriction on commerce such as tariffs and import quotas.

The leading players in the North America alcoholic drinks market include Anheuser-Busch InBev, Constellation Brands, Inc., Moosehead Brewing Co, Diageo plc and SABMiller.

Anheuser-Busch is the leading player in the United States beer market, holding a 47.6% share of all beer sales to United States retailers. The company produces both Budweiser and Bud Light, two of the largest selling beers in the world. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the largest brewer in the world.

In Mexico, a wide variety of alcoholic beverages are consumed, including some that predate colonial settlement. Overall, however, Mexicans currently prefer beer and distilled alcoholic beverages, such as tequila and rum. In fact, beer accounted for 89% of all alcoholic beverages consumed in Mexico in 1989.

By 2016, the industry is expected to have increased in size in value terms, with the United States still leading, on a value of $180.26 billion. Mexico and Canada are expected to follow, with values of $30.33 billion and $27.12 billion respectively.

Despite the United States being the largest player in the market, the country is expected to witness a decline in terms of volume between 2011 and 2016, with forecasts predicting a -0.6% CAGR decline.
