Bishop’s Move research reveals 42 per cent of North East residents will consider moving abroad due to rising cost of living

Forty-two per cent of residents in the North East will consider relocating abroad due to the general rising cost of living. The study, conducted by Bishop’s Move the UK’s largest privately owned removals company, has gained an insight into the emigration motives of the North East public and highlights what impact the rising cost of living is having on attitudes to living in the UK.

The research, conducted amongst 1,000 respondents, found that in comparison just 22 per cent in London and 20 per cent in East Anglia will consider moving abroad due to the rising cost of living. However, a third (33 per cent) of those in the North West also cited this as their main motive for wanting to relocate abroad – highlighting a North and South divide in attitudes.

A further 26 per cent of North East residents will consider relocating abroad due to the bad weather – again, this is in stark comparison to the South of England where 8 per cent in the South East and 9 per cent in London cited this as their main migration motive.

Other results from the Bishop’s Move survey show 12 per cent of those in the North East will consider leaving if the Government introduces more tax rises this year, compared to just 4 per cent of those living in Yorkshire.

Chris Marshall, Bishop’s Move Marketing Director comments on the findings: “It’s interesting to see the attitudes of the North East public to escalating living costs. In comparison to other regions it might be fair to say they are unfortunately feeling the pinch more than others. Those in the South of England are seemingly being less affected by the general rising costs of living compared to those in the North – clearly pointing to a North and South divide.

“If people do decide to move abroad or instead look for a new life at another location in the UK, then I encourage them to plan rigorously well before their move.”
