Clockwise from left: Anthea Hamilton 'Divers' Poster, Michael Craig-Martin 'Go' Poster, Howard Hodgkin 'Swimming' Poster and Rachel Whiteread 'LOndON 2012' Poster - all available from Easyart.com very soon.
The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic posters were launched on 4 November 2011 at Tate Britain, and they'll be displayed as part of the London 2012 Festival next summer. Easyart.com is very proud to announce that we'll be stocking all 12 of posters by some of the best British artists working today, going live in the week beginning 21 November 2011.
Predictably, these posters produced by modern artists like Tracey Emin and Howard Hodgkin have provoked complaints from critics and the public, centering around the fact that artists, rather than graphic designers, have been asked to create these posters.
However, the opportunity to see these posters as artworks in their own right has been completely missed. It should be no surprise that an abstract painter like Hodgkin would use broad blue brushstrokes to express what he feels is the dynamic energy involved in swimming.
It's also great to see a strong female contribution to the project, with my personal favourite being Anthea Hamilton's 'Divers' with it's elegant white silhouette contrasted against ripples of poolwater - whilst also drawing attention to the fact that synchronised swimming is the one women-only event in the Olympics.
