The Philippines beer market was generally flat and fairly non-eventful in 2012 with limited NPD. Of the top five umbrella brands controlling over 99% of the market, only Red Horse (San Miguel Philippines) managed to see growth.
In volume terms, the Philippines is one of the main beer markets in Asia and beer, in turn, is the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the country. Imports remain a minor element of the market at a fraction of one percent of volume and this seems unlikely to change in the short-term as price restricts the buying audience to a very small part of the population (mainly young professionals).
Exports are ten times the level of imports but are still restricted. The main exporter is San Miguel Corporation and its top three export markets in 2012, by volume, were Korea (26% of exports), Singapore (12%) and Taiwan (11%). Filipinos enjoy high alcohol beer. 61% of beer consumed in the country is over 5.5% Abv. Most is Red Horse (6.9% Abv).
