Press Release   •   Oct 18, 2010 17:44 BST

This past Friday (October 15, 2010) the Bretonside Bus station in Plymouth recieived a deep clean in preparation for the Christmas season.

Organised by the City Centre Company, a joint action force from across the city, including students from City College Plymouth, staff from the City Centre Company and City Council, the Probation Service, Local Police, Plymouth MP Oliver Colvile and Leader of the Council Vivien Pengelly will take to Bretonside to give the Bus Station a deep clean!

The event saw the Bus Station get spruced up with a thorough power-washing of bus shelters, seating, stair wells and litter bins before walls and bins get a fresh lick of paint. Ceilings were swept, lights repaired, drains cleared and the whole station ‘bird-proofed’.

Breakfast for the Bretonside task force volunteers was provided by Future Inns Plymouth Hotel, with refreshments throughout the day courtesy of Ian Lewis of Bunny's.

Kathy Davey, Street Operations Manager at Plymouth City Centre Company who organised the clean up said: "The city centre belongs to all of us and, hopefully, by working together we can have a big impact. We’ve already got a clean city centre but this is a chance to spruce up Bretonside in preparation for the influx of Christmas shoppers and reinforce our reputation as one of the UK’s cleanest shopping centres.”

Clint Jones, City Centre Manager said: “Our Clean Team works hard to keep the city centre looking its best throughout the year, but it’s great to get a wide range of people involved in looking after an important gateway to the city.

We’re gearing up to welcome thousands of people to Plymouth for the Winter Festival, which starts on Thursday November 18th with the switch on of our Christmas lights and the opening of our Ice Rink on the Piazza. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to pitch in with the team to help Bretonside Bus Station sparkle ready for Christmas.”

In March 2009 Plymouth's city centre streets were given a five-star rating in the Clean Britain Awards.
