RELEASE OF THE HOBBIT SEES BRITS PACKING FOR MIDDLE EARTH

New Zealand bookings on the rise for British holidaymakers

13 December 2012:Expedia.co.uk has seen a remarkable surge of up to 84% in bookings to New Zealand in the weeks leading up to the World Premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It seems the eagerly anticipated prequel has already captured the hearts of British holiday makers as they prepare to ditch the grey British skies for the wonderful sights and sounds of Peter Jackson’s interpretation of middle earth. The latest figures from the online travel agent showed that sales of hotel stays and flights to New Zealand had risen considerably compared with the same period in 2011 – and, on average, bookings for New Zealand in November alone were up by 50%.

New Zealand tourism in general saw a significant fall in tourism income [1] following the Christchurch earthquake in 2011 and for the past year, Tourism New Zealand has been leading the charge to maximise the opportunities brought about by the Lord of the Rings franchise following the surge in tourism when the final film was released almost a decade ago, back in 2003.

From incredible national parks to stunning landscapes as far as the eye can see,  it’s no surprise that New Zealand, the land of Mirkwood and the lonely mountain, has quicklybecome the ‘centre’ of attention for British holidaymakers in the latter half of 2012.
