The renal dialysis equipment market has been forecast to rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5% over the next six years, increasing from a value of $5,543.3 million in 2011, to reach a market value of $7,546.2 million by 2018.
Dialysis accessories make up the largest segment of the renal dialysis equipment market, accounting for about 57% of the total market. Dialyzers accounted for about 47% of the global dialysis accessories market in 2011.
The process of real dialysis involves filtering the blood, the way kidneys normally do, using a machine. A patient has two catheters, or small tubes, inserted. One catheter is placed in a vein and the other in an artery. The arterial catheter removes the blood from the patient where it then travels into a dialysis machine. The dialysis machine filters the blood to rid it of waste products, similar to the way the kidneys normally do. The filtered blood then returns to the patient through the venous catheter.
Fears of hospital acquired infections (HAI) and increasingly stringent insurance regulations are encouraging the employment of single-use medical equipment. While reusable dialyzers have traditionally been used in clinics for the treatment of renal disease, their associated health hazards mean that patients are becoming more and more likely to be treated with single-use dialyzers.
Reusable dialyzers can pose a potential threat to the health of patients through an increased risk of bacterial infections, and both patients and healthcare workers can suffer from exposure to the high concentrations of germicides used in reprocessing.
Major manufacturers such as Fresenius Medical Care, the largest dialysis services provider in the world and provider of products and services for individuals undergoing dialysis because of chronic kidney failure, have stepped up production of single-use dialyzers, further facilitating the transition of healthcare facilities away from reusable products.
