Android is the operating system that runs the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. So it’s safe to assume that its successor, the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2, will run Android as well. Well, according to a new report, this will not be the case. It will run Tizen, the new OS being developed by a number of companies, including Samsung.
The rumour comes to us courtesy of USA Today. The news site reports, “The new version of Samsung's Gear smartwatch will run on Tizen, not Google's Android operating system, the latest attempt by the South Korean electronics giant to develop more of its own software and services, according to three people familiar with the situation.
“Samsung will unveil the updated Gear watch, and a new HTML5 version of the Tizen operating system, at an event at the Mobile World Congress later this month in Barcelona, the people said. They did not want to be identified because Samsung's plans are not yet public. Samsung spokeswoman Laurie Spindler declined to comment.”
Like any unconfirmed report, treat this information just like any other rumour for now.
Samsung is expected to lift the lid on the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 alongside the Samsung Galaxy S5 at its Unpacked 5 event, which kicks off at MWC 2014 in Barcelona, Spain on the 24th of February (just a few days away). We’ll know by then if this rumour is true.
