The session border controller (SBC) industry has been forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.6% through 2016, driven by the increasing adoption of SIP Trunking and the emergence of router-integrated session border controllers.
Traditionally SBCs were deployed in fixed-line networks for residential and business VoIP service access; now they are finding applications in interconnection between service providers as the industry is moving toward all-IP architecture.
Globally, enterprises and service providers are using SBCs for various reasons.
A session border controller (SBC) is a piece of network equipment or a collection of functions that control real-time session traffic at the signaling, call-control, and packet layers as they cross a notional packet-to-packet network border between networks or between network segments.
SBCs are critical to the deployment of VOIP networks, because they address the inability of real-time session traffic to cross network address translation (NAT) device or firewall boundaries
Standalone SBCs are plagued with jitters, and are hence prone to decline in performance. Recently, companies have begun developing router-integrated SBC to avoid jitters in networks.
Integrated configurations also provide service operators with advantages of reduced cost, form-factor, and power consumption. In this approach, a router is effectively used for SBC services with additional applications.
It helps service providers to reduce their equipment cost. It also controls other operating expenses such as space and power utilization.
Interoperability issues of SBC devices is a key challenge currently facing the market. End-users prefer SBC devices that have less interoperability concerns and can be integrated with an existing network.
Also, the demand for SBCs is driven by the growing uses of SIP; introduction of any new trunking technology can replace SIP technology, which will impact the growth of this market adversely.
Major players currently dominating the SBC industry include Acme Packet Inc., AudioCodes Ltd., Cisco Networks, Genband Inc., Huawei Technologies, and Sonus Networks Inc.
