Sony Ericsson Aspen - A New Envirophone

Press Release   •   Nov 23, 2010 23:09 GMT

The Sony Ericsson Aspen is one of a few members of a new eco-friendly family introduced by the corporate giants. This offering is the pocket-PC model that aims to please the business types. So what can be said for this new device? Is it as kind to the user as it is to the environment?

The Aspen’s user interface is a double-edged sword. It offers both a 3.2” colour-resistive touchscreen alongside a four-row QWERTY keypad and a D-pad navigator. Although having both gives the user options, the small size and low resolution of the screen means it isn’t the best for touchscreen navigation.

The device runs on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Professional operating system. This OS is a considerable improvement on the previous efforts from Microsoft, however there has now come a point where manufacturers are making tweaks of their own. The Aspen sports Sony Ericsson’s new XPERIA panels, which offers users and fun and new way to navigate applications on their mobile. Six panels are pre-installed and appear as tiles on screen. These are fully customizable but unfortunately they can prove to be inconsistent in performance at times. The Aspen is highly connective boasting 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, microUSB and Bluetooth as standard. The device supports its online features like Internet browsing and social networking well. The Internet browser itself is Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and does come with Flash support for quite a broad and open browsing experience.

Unfortunately, the camera on the Aspen is somewhat of a disappointment. It is 3 megapixels with fixed focus and not much else. The device has no designated shutter key and only supports quite a low-resolution of photograph. In the same respects, video recording is also poor; only supporting a VGA resolution up to 15fps.
