South London & Maudsley leads the way for other NHS Trusts in proving commitment to environment and energy management

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has become the first trust in the UK to achieve certification to BS EN 16001, the energy management system standard with BSI. The trust is also in the final stages of certifying to ISO 14001, the environment management system standard. Both of these achievements will span the trust’s three main hospital sites (Maudsley, Bethlem Royal and Lambeth) as well as 140 other community sites and will provide a benchmark for the trust to exceed its carbon reduction targets.

The leading trust offers the widest portfolio of services of any NHS trust in the UK and is the largest provider of mental health services in the UK. It provides care and treatment for a local population of 1.1 million people in South London.

BS EN 16001 enables an organisation to develop and implement an energy policy, identify significant areas of energy consumption and target energy reductions, implement operational controls and check the effectiveness of processes and procedures through monitoring and audits.

Graham Richards, Head of Estates at South London and Maudsley explains: “Energy reduction and looking towards continuous improvement has always been a key driver for the trust, and the NHS as a whole. As a leading NHS trust, it is important for us to set an example in the reduction of energy consumption and improving our environmental performance and certification is the best indicator of how we are performing. Last year alone we reduced our energy emissions by 17 per cent in the year and we are aiming to make a further 5.5 per cent reduction this year. Certification has given us a structure and a framework to enable us to meet and even exceed our energy reduction targets.”

As the first NHS Trust to achieve EN 16001, SLaM has been working in collaboration with Blackmores, a BSI approved consultancy firm which specialises in supporting trusts to implement energy and environmental management systems.  As a result of the increasing demand to achieve certification and achieve cost savings and environmental reductions, Blackmores have created a ‘fast track’ certification route to help encourage other trusts into certification. The fast track process would take roughly four months, compared to the standard 12 months.

Richards continues, “The NHS is the largest public body in the UK so it is important that energy reduction plays a key part in the day to day operation, and as such, it has taken the initiative to set high energy reduction figures for every trust. Based on the early indicators of South London and Maudsley NHS trust, we are on schedule to meet our targets and are also running renewable energy schemes starting in 2011 which are estimated to save at least another 1000 tonnes of Co2.”
