Spanish concentrate market led by Rives-Pitman

Press Release   •   Jun 05, 2013 17:15 BST

Off-trade current value sales within the Spanish concentrate market increased by 1% through 2012, reaching a value of €28 million.

A concentrate is a form of substance which has had the majority of its base component (in the case of a liquid: the solvent) removed. Typically this will be the removal of water from a solution or suspension such as the removal of water from fruit juice.

One benefit of producing a concentrate is that of a reduction in weight and volume for transportation as the concentrate can be re-constituted at the time of usage by the addition of the solvent.

Powder concentrates performed positively in 2012, due mainly to the rising popularity of sporting activity in Spain. Since most of the references that make-up powder concentrates are sports drinks, the product area is highly popular among athletes. People participating in sports are increasingly leaning toward powder varieties due to their lower unit prices, when compared to regular versions.

Liquid concentrates are more associated with the on-trade channel. These products are used mainly to accompany cocktails in bars and night clubs. In 2012, on-trade volume and current value sales of liquid concentrates continued to fall.

With consumers cutting down on leisure expenditure and spending more free time at home, bars and restaurants continued to witness a decline in visitors. This affected most products offered by foodservice operators, including liquid concentrates.

Rives-Pitman remains the leading player in concentrates, with a 46% share of off-trade value sales in 2012. Its leadership is attributed to a dominance of liquid concentrates, where it held an 84% share of off-trade value sales.

Schweppes is ranked second in liquid concentrates with a 10% share of off-trade value sales in 2012. The company strongly pushes this product in the retail channel.

Powerade continued to record the biggest off-trade value share growth in 2012 to reach 15% in powder concentrates (ranked second) and 7% in concentrates overall (ranked third).
