Action for Brazil's Children

The Big City Sleep

Press release   •   Mar 13, 2012 15:28 GMT

The income inequality is a main cause for the large amount of people that live in extreme poverty in the world today. There are thousands of children and young people who are marginalized by society, without access to education, health, housing, leisure or even a family to care for them. Those children alone are not able to change this situation, but we can help them make this happen. With this objective, ABC Trust (Action for Brazil's Children) invites you to participate for the 3rd edition of the "Big City Sleep", that will take place at Spitalfields Market in London, on the night of 23rd March, 2012.

In a fun and entertaining way, through a series of Brazilian dance and music performances, such as, capoeira, samba and “forró”, Londoners will swap their comfortable beds at home for cardboard boxes for one night and brave the cold. Jimena Page, founder of ABC Trust, explains that this event is not an attempt to undermine or trivialize the issues faced by the street children in Brazil, but to recreate, to a certain extent, the challenges they face in their daily life. “The goal of the “Big City Sleep” is to show our society some aspects of life of those children who live in the streets in Brazil, the difference is that participants can go back to the comfort of their homes the next day”, said Jimena.

The "Big Sleep City" aims to raise funds for our partner projects, dedicated to children and young people in vulnerable situations in Brazil. Over the last two years, we were able to raise £ 30,000. ABC's goal is to continue growing and raising funds to touch the lives of many more children and their families. Among many of children we were able to help so far, is Mailson, a boy who lived on the streets of Salvador, in the of Northeast Brazil, who from a very early age was beaten by his mother and became a user of crack. Today, he attends the project 'Viva a Vida' and is rehabilitated. "I thank Viva a Vida for the opportunity and support they gave me to leave the streets and fight for a better life," said Mailson.

The "Big City Sleep" is organized by the ABC Trust in partnership with Spitalfields Estate and Hammerson.

The Action for Brazil’s Children Trust is a London based charity dedicated to helping the street children and most vulnerable young people of Brazil. By raising awareness and funding, we support the work of local community-led projects which provide these children with the support, education and inspiration they need to help transform their own lives. The ABC Trust is supported by a number of high profile artists, our patrons include: Jimmy Page (OBE), Brian May (CBE), Jeremy Irons, Pele, Fernando Meirelles, Juliette Lewis, Romero Britto, Carlos Miele, Bebel Gilberto, & Julian Lloyd Webber.

Notes to Editors:

It is important to note that the Big City Sleep is not in any way trying to re-enact a day in the life of a street child, nor are we trivialising the challenges faced by street children by providing participants with entertainment and food. The challenge will require individuals to go out of their comfort zones for 12 hours, it is therefore important to ensure that their well being and safety is also considered. The tone of the event will be set by the literature published and the schedule of the night itself, e.g. the showing of a short film about the ABC Trust to inform participants about ABC, the cause and the kinds of projects the Big City Sleep will directly help.

We develop partnerships with Brazilian community organisations which not only provide vital training, education and support for young people, but also fire their imagination and creativity through dance, film, drama and music.

Over 3000 children and their families are reached every day through projects made possible by ABC supporters' donations. From counselling to medical care to film-editing workshops, our work provides an all-too-rare source of hope for some of Brazil’s poorest and most vulnerable children.
