IDS recently celebrated the work of Research Associate and former IDS Director Sir Richard Jolly with a major conference looking at what can be done to move the key issues of human development, inequality and social justice up the global political agenda. To mark the occasion current IDS Director Lawrence Haddad interviewed Richard about the current shifts in the world system including the rise of the BRICS countries and the impact of the ongoing financial crisis and what they mean for international development.
The interview tackles some of the major questions currently facing world leaders and the development community including:
- Will the influence of the BRICS countries challenge US economic thinking and orthodoxies in international systems and development policy?
- Are there lessons to be learnt from the Asian financial crisis of the late 90’s as we grapple with the Euro crisis?
- Is it time for equity to come in from the cold and rejoin the development agenda?
- What will be the biggest challenge and opportunity for development over the next decade?
