TLC Engineering for Architecture Selects IES Virtual Environment

Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES), a provider of integrated performance analysis software and consulting services for sustainable building design and operation, today announced that TLC Engineering for Architecture has chosen its Virtual Environment (VE) as their primary energy modeling tool. IES’ VE software was chosen due to its integrated environment, consistent and reliable results, and superior visual graphics. The VE software integrates load calculations, energy modeling, daylighting analysis, and life-cycle cost analysis into one central user-friendly program, saving the user time.

With over 300 employees, 11 offices and 57 years in business, TLC Engineering for Architecture wanted to ensure that its staff was well educated in how to effectively use IES’ suite of tools. To achieve this they gathered 22 engineers and designers from around their firm for three days of in-person live IES training. Taking a ‘hands-on’ approach, IES showed TLC how to use the VE in application on real project situations and advised them to set up an “intranet” forum where they could interact and share advice on design tasks. IES is using the forum to offer the company continued expert advice and support throughout the implementation process.

“This contextual approach to training was extraordinarily valuable”, said Kim Shinn, Principal/Senior Sustainability Consultant at TLC. “It really grounded our modelers in understanding how the VE would make design tasks easier and the designs themselves better. The investment we’ve made with this training was the best money we’ve spent, easily equal to the value of the investment we made in the VE licenses themselves.”

Speaking about the benefits of the software he adds “The VE contains the most complete set of advanced analysis tools in an integrated software suite that we have seen. It is a major advantage to be able to build a model once, and then perform everything from a PRM simulation to CFD without rebuilding. The graphic capabilities really appeal to our architectural clients. It allows us to be much more consultative at early design stages, and to be a truly integrated design participant.”

TLC is currently using IES’ Virtual Environment for several projects, including the Mayport Fitness Center, the Red Sox training facility and the Ft. Benning Martin Army Community Hospital.
