Revenue within the touch screen module market has been forecast to nearly double over the next five years, hitting a value of $31.9 billion by 2018.
Key factors set to drive growth within the sector include the ease of use and intuitive interfaces touch screens enable, which can save time and increase productivity. Furthermore, falling prices have also spurred adoption.
There a number of different ways in which to build a touch screen, although not all of them are suitable for use in the rapidly growing consumer electronics market, which needs high performance and clarity.
There are currently 15 difference touch screen technologies, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, and are therefore used in different applications.
This sense of more touch screen technologies coming to the fore will be heightened in the coming years as touch interfaces are added to more existing devices, each with difference display sizes ranging from a few inches to over 150 inches.
The next game-changer is expected to be alternatives for indium tin oxide (ITO), which is used as touch screen sensor material, and is expensive due to the high price of the raw materials.
Leading the touch screen technology market are high-end mobile consumer-electronic devices, such as smart phones and tablets. Here, the two main technologies used are analogue resistive and projected capacitive.
Mobile phones remain the largest application sector for touch screens in terms of unit shipments, accounting for three-fourths of units shipped in 2011. Analysts forecast that 1.2 billion touch screens would be shipped for mobile phone applications in 2012, up 68% Y/Y.
Over the coming years, the next big markets for touch screens will be ebooks, (mobile) game consoles, car displays and navigation devices as well as digital cameras for small to medium size displays. Bigger touchscreens over 10-inch will be more regularly found in laptops and PC monitors as well as other screens and TVs.
