Getting and staying active in later life is the message behind this year’s Older People’s Day celebrations in Tower Hamlets.
There will be a series of events taking place throughout the borough to mark the national day with the council hosting a flagship event with LinkAge Plus on Thursday 30 September at Mile End Leisure Centre.
The event will be aimed at encouraging residents to take up a physical activity and to raise awareness of the benefits exercise brings.
John Roog, Service Head for Older People at Tower Hamlets Council said: “Preparing well for, and enjoying, a positive later life benefits each of us individually and society as a whole.
"This year’s event promises to be different with lots of activities for residents to try out, meet new friends or you can just sit back and enjoy the entertainment on offer. Whether you come every year or this is your first time it is a day not to be missed."
The festivities, which will include theatre, dancing, swimming and an egg and spoon race will run from 10.30am-2.30pm.
Over at Silk Court in Bethnal Green, a 1940s themed celebration is planned for Wednesday 27 October.
Staff and residents will be invited to wear 1940s attire and served a lunch of jellied eels and cockles with stout and light ale or port and lemonade to drink.
There will also be 1940s music for a good old fashioned sing-a-long and a Pearly Queen will be coming along to get the party started. The fun starts at 2.30pm. To find out more call 020 7729 6490.
