A scheme to encourage more residents to get active and shape up for life for just a £1 an activity has been rolled out by Tower Hamlets Council.

The hugely successful Get Active programme delivered in partnership with GLL has been run at York Hall Leisure Centre and Whitechapel Sports Centres over the last two years and will be introduced at Langdon Park Leisure Centre this year.

The scheme enables new leisure centre members to try out activities such as group exercise classes, gym equipment or sports from netball, tennis, swimming right through to football for just £1 per activity.

At present the scheme is at Whitechapel Leisure Centre and has resulted in more than 250 residents signing up and getting more physically active over the past 12 months.

Zoraida Sarmiento Victoria from Whitechapel said: “The scheme was a dream, come true. It enabled me to exercise when it suited me.”

The Get Active programme will be launched on Saturday 2 October and is open to any new leisure centre members aged 17 and over living in Poplar, Limehouse, East India and Lansbury.

Residents will be able to sign up for free at the launch from 10am-4pm at Langdon Park Leisure Centre in Byron Street, Poplar.

Lisa Pottinger, Head of Sport & Physical Activity at Tower Hamlets Council said: “The Get Active programme is a great way to get fit and try out a wealth of activities for only £1. I hope people will take advantage of this offer and use it to find a sport or exercise class which suits them and they can stick to.”
