A drama season celebrating Bengali theatre in East London has attracted a crop of talented writers to stage a series of original works and adaptations.
Organised by Tower Hamlets Council’s Arts and Event team, A Season of Bangla Drama, is an annual event now in its eighth year showcasing new writing and the work of drama groups in the borough chronicling the Bengali community.
Eight works have been selected to premiere at the festival which will be staged at The Brady Arts Centre in Hanbury Street, Whitechapel, from November 6-28.
The festival will include plays tackling a wide range of issues from the plight of restaurant workers in the UK to women’s rights and social inequality but with a fresh, funny and light hearted approach.
Rehearsals are currently underway for the festival. The Council is supporting the rich seam of talent by providing free rehearsal space at the Kobi Nazrul Centre in Whitechapel, technical assistance for lighting and music and help with marketing and promoting their show ahead of the festival.
Steve Murray, Head of Arts and Events at Tower Hamlets Council said: “A Season of Bangla Drama is one of our flagship events which celebrates new writing and promoting the wealth of talent we have here in the borough.
By offering a diverse programme we hope to build on our reputation for offering a prestigious, high quality and unique celebration of Bengali art.”
