UK automotive market driven by sales of the Ford Fiesta

Press Release   •   Jul 05, 2013 11:19 BST

Car sales in Britain have motored ahead for the 16th month in a row, outpacing the rest of Europe and providing a boost for manufacturers.

UK new car registrations jumped by 13.4% in June from a year earlier, with almost 215,000 new vehicles registered in June.
ales so far in 2013 are 10 per cent higher than in 2012, with the UK the only major market in the EU to show sustained growth.

The SMMT said that car sales this year were on track to be "well ahead" of levels seen in 2012. The private, fleet and business sectors all grew from January to June, with growth in private sales jumping by 17.1% in the first six months of the year.

Sales still lag pre-crisis levels, but the growth has eased fears over the future of the UK's £55 billion car industry, which last year became the second largest in the EU after Germany.

Like 2012, Ford is dominating the new car market. The Ford Fiesta is top of the charts with 63,040 sales with its bigger brother the Ford Focus in second position with 47,675 sales. The popularity of the Fiesta is evident with its closest rival the Vauxhall Corsa in third position with 46,147 sales.

Other top 10 finishers include the Vauxhall Astra, VW Golf, Nissan Qashqai and VW Polo. Premium brands like BMW are also proving to be popular with the 1 Series and 3 Series also making the top 10.

Sales of cars to private buyers rose 21.3 per cent in June, against a 6.1 per cent rise in fleet sales.

The rise in sales has coincided with strong demand for smaller and less polluting vehicles, according to the SMMT, with average new car CO2 emissions down an annual 3.7 per cent in the first six months of the year.
