Sales within the UK retail market rose 2.9 per cent in the year to June, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said this morning, reflecting a recent rise in consumer spending.
Like-for-like sales, which exclude expanded shop floor space, were up 1.4 per cent, the BRC revealed. Retail sales values have risen by three per cent in the first half of this year, in comparison to the first half of 2012. Last year, the figure was 1.8 per cent.
The summer sun has helped to lift shoppers' spirits, with retailers reporting strong spending on clothing. Periods of sunshine helped to lift the gloom on the high street and retailers celebrated another month of rising sales.
One of the best performing areas was fashion. As the weather warmed up, a good reaction was seen to the excellent promotions that are available at the moment, accompanied by continuing demand for value and essential items.
Audio, video and computing devices including tablets were also in demand during June while the weather saw a rise in the sale of hayfever products.
Suncare sales started to accelerate towards the end of the month as people stocked up for the better weather at home and ahead of holiday periods abroad.
The weather also helped DIY and gardening products record a good month, with some of the purchases that may have been postponed during the cold weather earlier in the year beginning to take place.
Online sales were up 14.1% compared with June 2012, when they had risen by 12.1%. This is the best performance since July 2012, excluding Christmas.
Helen Dickinson, Director General, British Retail Consortium, said: "Despite challenging economic conditions continuing, June saw another strong performance from the UK's retailers, with very respectable overall growth across the categories. At this halfway point in the year we are able to see that sales are well ahead of the previous six month period, confirming that the retail recovery is continuing."
