The US sauces, dressings and condiments packaging market saw a decrease in unit volume sales throughout 2011, with values decreasing by 1% to reach 5.6 billion units.
Pasta sauce packaging, already the largest category within the US sauces, dressings and condiments packaging market, increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1% in unit volume terms. Glass jars remain the preferred format for pasta sauce, with most of the major brands' most popular sizes still found in glass.
However, rigid plastic packaging increased by 6% in unit volume terms, as many product manufacturers are beginning to use PET jars for their larger sizes, and are considering the advantages of PET for all sizes.
The light weighting factors associated with PET that allow for sustainability claims, along with the reduced breakage simply added to the appeal for product manufacturers.
The steadily growing popularity of convenience foods, rising demand for exotic cuisines, and the trend towards innovative and attractive packaging, continue to drive demand for sauces, dressing and condiments.
Europe and Asia-Pacific constitute two of the largest and most influential regions for the US sauces, dressings and condiments packaging market. In terms of growth, Latin America is projected to take the lead, expanding at the overall fastest CAGR of 3.2% through 2015.
Over the period to 2016, growth of PET bottles in sauces, dressings and condiments is expected to be significant, with a CAGR of 1%. This is due to increasing penetration of PET bottles into categories where glass continues to be used, like mayonnaise and mustard.
In contrast, glass packaging unit volume sales will have a slightly negative CAGR, as manufacturers continue to opt for lighter, 'greener' packaging.
