Weight loss management market driven by the global increase in obesity levels

Press Release   •   Jun 05, 2013 12:21 BST

The weight loss management market was worth a value of $265 billion in the year 2012, with the global increase in obesity levels, increasing number of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and cardiac problems, increasing personal disposable income, government initiatives to increase awareness about health and fitness, and technological advancements set to drive market growth to a value of $361 billion by 2017.

The weight loss management market is divided into three major segments, namely diets (foods, beverages, & supplements), services, and fitness and surgical equipment.

Weight loss, in the context of medicine, health or physical fitness, is a reduction of the total body mass, due to a mean loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue and/or lean mass, namely bone mineral deposits, muscle, tendon and other connective tissue.

It can occur unintentionally due to an underlying disease or can arise from a conscious effort to improve an actual or perceived overweight or obese state.

Intentional weight loss refers to the loss of total body mass in an effort to improve fitness and health, and/or to change appearance. Therapeutic weight loss, in individuals who are overweight or obese, can decrease the likelihood of developing diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, and certain types of cancer.

Weight loss food is the largest segment of the weight loss diets market and contains such dubious 'foods' as meal replacements, low-calorie ready meals, sugar free confectionaries and low-calorie desserts.

North America represents the largest region within the weight loss management market, followed by Europe and Asia. North America and Europe are expected to grow at a slower pace, primarily due to the economic slowdown and market maturity, where as the Asian market, especially India and China, is expected to witness a boost in demand for weight loss products, and is poised to register maximum growth over the next five years, owing to the rising obesity rates and related health problems such as diabetes and heart diseases.
