YOU vs Bjorn Borg

Press release   •   Mar 16, 2012 09:00 GMT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bjorn Borg Versus You

You could be taking on Bjorn Borg in a Charity Exhibition tennis match this summer. The fifth greatest player of all time (Sports Illustrated) is challenging you to help raise £100,000 for several good causes, including the leading youth homelessness charity Centrepoint, by facing him on centre court at the Lightwater Leisure Centre in Lightwater, Surrey.

Jamie Banwell-Clode, Manager at Lightwater Leisure Centre, said today (Monday 5th March 2012):

“Imagine staring down Bjorn Borg across a grass court as he prepares to serve. Imagine testing yourself against his legendary ground game. This can happen. We’re very excited to be able to offer you this opportunity.”

The ice-man from Sweden, who dominated 1970s Tennis, winning five consecutive Wimbledon titles in a row, brought a new generation of fans to the game. Those fans now get a chance to play the man himself. Could you bring the fiery passion of McEnroe to the court that finally toppled Borg in 1981?

For frustrated fans of British tennis, this could be the chance to snatch glory for the UK in a year which began with Andy Murray being robbed of a showdown with Rafael Nadal in the Australian open by Novak Djokovic. A British amateur defeating a Swedish master could be a morale booster for Murray at Wimbledon 2012.

The event is part of a drive to raise £100, 000 for charity. Local charities W.C.Lees Resthomes and James Butler Almshouses in Surrey will be supported alongside the youth homelessness charity, Centrepoint.

John Raynham, Head of Fundraising at Centrepoint, said:

“This is a brilliant opportunity for tennis fans to cross rackets with a Wimbledon legend, while raising money to help some of the 80,000 young people who will experience homelessness this year across the UK...For many young people supported by Centrepoint, sport is vital to building the confidence they need to find work and move on to independent living.”

Organisers announced that any passionate amateur is eligible to play, on condition that they can survive longer than five minutes and look great in 1970s sports wear. A gold chain is optional.

Contenders will register their details at www.lightwaterleisurecentre.com/bjornborg. The hopefuls will then play a qualifying tournament in June. Judges will select one male, female and junior to play one set each against Bjorn on the big day. Judges will select on quality of play, personality and enthusiasm to ensure a spectacular event for all involved on Saturday 8th September 2012.

“John McEnroe can’t make it. Can you?” - Jamie Banwell-Clode
