Zurich gains Gold in Corporate Responsibility Index

Press release   •   Mar 16, 2012 14:42 GMT

For the fourth year running, Zurich has achieved GOLD in Business in the Community’s (BITC) 2012 Corporate Responsibility Index (CRI), the UK’s leading voluntary benchmark of corporate responsibility. The insurer has also improved its overall score from 2011.

As a socially responsible company, Zurich is committed to making a difference in the community, primarily through its funding and support of the Zurich Community Trust, Zurich’s charitable arm. The Trust provides an umbrella for all Zurich’s community involvement in the UK and supports more than 600 charities each year. Last year, Zurich's employees donated £521,300 as well as 5916 days of volunteering.

As well as investing in communities, Zurich believes that helping to protect the environment is essential. The insurer continuously seeks opportunities to run its business in an environmentally sustainable way, including energy and water conservation, waste minimisation, and reducing paper consumption. All of Zurich’s self occupied properties in the UK use a combination of renewable electricity and good quality combined heat and power.

Kay Martin, Chair of Zurich's Corporate Responsibility Council, said “Zurich is proud to have achieved Gold in the BITC 2012 Corporate Responsibility Index. It is testament to the company’s steadfast commitment to meeting our wider social and environmental obligations as a leading corporate business in the UK.

“We fully embrace sustainability at Zurich and our position in the Index shows that we place these values at the core of our business. During these difficult economic times, it is more important than ever that businesses across the UK play a key role in supporting their local communities”.

Zurich recently successfully renewed its BITC ‘CommunityMark’ status and was named among the Sunday Times Top 25 Big Companies to Work For in 2012, earning special awards in the categories ‘Giving Something Back’ and ‘Personal Growth’ for the company’s Corporate Responsibility activities and its Learning & Development (L&D) function.
