The Northern Lights Set to Peak

NASA has predicted that as a result of an unusually strong Solar Maximum over the next couple of years, it will be possible to see the clearest and most vibrant display of The Northern Lights since 1958. The spectacular lightshow that is the Aurora Borealis is, in simple terms, produced by solar wind (charged particles) interacting with the oxygen and nitrogen in the earth’s atmosphere. The extremely high level of activity that the sun will be experiencing during this time means that there will be a larger number of charged particles produced, and consequently the effect we see on Earth will be that much more intense.  This pattern of peaks of troughs means the Sun only reaches it’s ‘Solar Maximum’ once every eleven years or so. This means that there will not be a more suited time to see the Aurora Borealis for over a decade.

To capitalise on this extraordinary display of colour in the night sky, Astro Trails have just launched a series of tours that offer a variety of experiences and destinations.

Norwegian Cruise

The first tour will cruise through the beautiful Fjords and scenic coastline in order to reach Arctic Norway - where it is possible to secure the best seats possible to enjoy this flourishing phenomenon. Even beyond the night skies, the tour boasts a staggering array of activities that enable guests to fully immerse themselves into the history and culture of Norway. Whether it’s guided city walks, husky sledging or perhaps even a traditional Viking feast; there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy this wonderful setting.

The tour will be joined by renowned Science and Astronomy writer Ian Ridpath. Mr Ridpath has been a full time writer and broadcaster on Astronomy since 1972, and has previously worked both at the University of London Observatory and in publishing. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (Council member 2004 – 07), as well as a member of the Society of Authors and of the Association of British Science Writers. He is also the Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of Astronomy and Norton’s Star Atlas, a publication now in its twentieth edition since 1910. Bringing with him this wealth of experience, Mr Ridpath will deliver a series of lectures and guided observations on-board to enhance your experience.

Prices on the tour start at £1899

Yellowknife and Arctic Canada

If a cruise isn’t for you, then Astro Trails also offer the opportunity to visit an exclusive lodge out in Canada’s NorthWest Territories. After flying into Yellowknife, the ‘diamond capital’ of North America, we board a ski plane to venture out into the remote wildnerness to stay at the stunning Blachford Lake Lodge – a location that played host to the Royal Couple as part of their honeymoon. The location of the lodge takes advantage of the predictable and more stable continental weather patterns to ensure the best chance of enjoying the Aurora Borealis in favourable conditions. What’s more, the Lodge even offers a wakeup service to allow you to sleep until the show starts. In the daytime you are free to book onto any number of winter activities, and explore the stunning landscape that surrounds you.

Prices on the tour start at £2195

Northern Lights Short Breaks

Finally, if you don’t quite have the time or the budget to book onto these longer itineraries, Astro Trails has just launched two short breaks directly to Tromsø or Reykjavik. Both cities are filled with cultural sights, winter activities and areas of particular interest. While the ‘Arctic Capital’ of Tromsø offers a distinctive and rugged Viking flavour to your stay, we have also picked a hotel specifically for its location outside of the city and with good opportunities to observe from your own room. Reykjavik offers something different altogether, thanks to geothermal activity providing luxurious naturally-heated spas and a tour of impressive natural phenomena.

Prices for Tromsø start from £325

Prices for Reykajavik start from £299
