Liverpool FC Champions League Success So Far Provokes Comments From Entrepreneur

Last week saw Liverpool FC make it through to the 2018 Champions League Final. As an avid Liverpool supporter, entrepreneur and Managing Director of the personalised marketing firm, Citipeak Events, Nick Johnson recently commented on the increasing number of footballers who are striking out as entrepreneurs.

Citipeak Events: About the firm

Since 1964, Liverpool FC has won eleven European trophies – the UEFA Champions League five times, the UEFA Europa league three times and the UEFA Super Cup three times. Last week, the club came one step closer to winning the 2018 UEFA Champions League as they beat A.S. Roma in the semi-finals resulting in them now facing Real Madrid in the final on 26th May in Kyiv.

For professional footballers today, entrepreneurship is an attractive option once they finish their brief and highly paid career. Having been born and raised in Liverpool, Citipeak Events owner is excited about the club's success in one of football’s most competitive club tournaments. Mr Johnson sees this as an opportunity to reflect on the increasing number of footballers who are turning their hand to successful entrepreneurship.

While some players retire from the game and take the coach or managerial route, it’s not uncommon for many to turn to business and entrepreneurship as the next step after their football career comes to an end.

Southampton and England left-back, Ryan Bertrand acts as a prime example of this. Bertrand owns fintech brokerage firm Silicon Markets as well as co-owning (with former Chelsea teammate John Terry) the FootiEmoji app.

A further example includes Cristiano Ronaldo who owns two clothing stores plus his shoe brand, CR7 Footwear in addition to recently launching a chain of boutique hotels, aptly named CR7 Hotels.

Arguably the most illustrious example of a player turned entrepreneur belongs to David Beckham who has built a global brand through his lucrative business relationships brands such as Haig Club and H&M.

When speaking about the close relationship between football professionals and entrepreneurship, Nick Johnson explained "Professional footballers are passionate about their careers. They are fully dedicated to conditioning, diet and maintaining high fitness levels. This dedication translates to entrepreneurship because like athletes, being an entrepreneur is an around the clock lifestyle".

Mr Johnson continued by stating: ‘Skills such as leadership, work ethic, teamwork, having a plan B and passion are practised and honed during professional football careers, so once their retirement comes along these skills can naturally be directed at alternative avenues such as a business’.
