Access improvements to popular Prestwich park

Bury Council is carrying out work to improve access to St Mary’s Park in Prestwich.

A new hard path is being laid to improve drainage and reduce the damage caused when popular events are held in the park.

The work is being funded by Section 106 money, i.e. money received from developers to pay towards local leisure or environmental improvements.

Prestwich councillor Alan Quinn, Bury Council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “The park hosts many successful events which attract thousands of local residents, such as Festwich and Prestwich Carnival.

“However, having so many people using the park in all weathers inevitably churns up the ground and leads to complaints.

“This investment should bring about big improvements, and complements all the work already done to ensure that all the main parks in Bury have won Green Flag status for eight years in a row, and the recent £65,000 investment in new tennis courts and community coaching in St Mary’s Park.”
