Brownfield first - affordable housing to be built on former garage sites

New affordable homes look set to be built on brownfield land on the site of a derelict garage colony in Radcliffe.

Eight two-bed homes to get people on the housing ladder are earmarked for the former Mayfair Avenue plots, which have long lain vacant.

The properties would be for shared ownership, where a resident buys a share of the property and pays rent on the proportion they don’t own. They can then buy further shares in the property in the future.

The proposal will beconsidered by the council’s cabinet next Wednesday (18 Oct), and depends on the council winning a bid to the Homes and Communities Agency for part of the development costs. If approved, work could start in January next year and be completed by October 2018. Planning permission was granted in May 2016.

Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, cabinet member for finance and housing, said: “One of our top priorities is to increase the supply of affordable housing in the borough. It’s also our priority to see new houses built on brownfield sites first.

“People need homes, and there is a strong demand for all types of accommodation here, in particular for affordable housing.

“This is a great use of two adjacent former garage colonies to provide much needed affordable homes for shared ownership, and it will also help in the ongoing regeneration of Radcliffe.”
