Press release -

Bury flies the flag for Armed Forces Day

The nation’s armed forces were celebrated yesterday (Monday 20 June) with a special flag-raising ceremony in Bury town centre.

Veterans, residents and civic leaders were there to pay tribute to the men and women past and present who have kept and continue to keep our country safe.

The event took place at Union Square, opposite the town hall, in advance of National Armed Forces Day (Saturday 25 June).

The Mayor of Bury, Councillor Mike Connolly, said: “Our armed forces do a magnificent job, often in life-threatening circumstances. Flying the flag is one way we can recognise and celebrate the vital role they play in all our lives.”

The mayor was joined by Colonel Brian Gorski from the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and representatives from the local regimental recruiting team. He said: “The support shown by local people during Armed Forces Day not only boosts morale but really means a lot to everyone in the armed forces and their families.”

Cllr Tamoor Tariq, cabinet member for communities and safer neighbourhoods, added: “Armed Forces Day is Bury’s chance to say ‘thank you’ to our local heroes. It gives us the opportunity to come together as a town to show our respect, support and appreciation for all the hard work our armed forces do every day, both in this country and throughout the world.”
