Press release -

Bury’s Hate Crime agenda relaunched

Police, community representatives and council officials will get together on Thursday 21 March to put together plans to tackle hate crime.

Hate crime is an act committed against any person or group who are seen to be different or vulnerable. It is often motivated by prejudice based on a person’s race, religion, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. It can take many forms and does not always involve physical violence.

Reports of hate crime in Bury have fallen by 27% in the past year; however, those who combat Hate Crime want to make sure that people who continue to need support get it. There are 13 reporting centres across the borough in community locations, designed for people who may not feel confident visiting a police station.

The relaunch aims to reinvigorate existing hate crime procedures and encourage partners to share their knowledge and ideas on how to prevent and reduce hate crime.
