Come and have a go – and they did!

A major Have a Go event bringing young people together with training providers and employers has been hailed a huge success.

More than 500 people attended the recent Backing Young Bury Career and Skills day, held at the Elizabethan Suite in Bury Town Hall.

The first of its kind in Bury, the event was to inspire those aged 14 to 24 to ‘have a go’ at different types of jobs and better understand the world of work and the types of careers, jobs and apprenticeships they could aspire to.

This was supported by 28 local businesses and training providers, who were on hand to provide a workplace simulation, answer questions and provide advice and guidance.

Jill O’Keefe from Prestwich Arts College said “our pupils certainly found it informative and worthwhile”, while Teresa Pukiello, deputy head teacher of Cloughside College, stated “it was a resounding success for students and staff alike. I've had very positive feedback from everyone who attended. We are all looking forward to the next one!”

Councillor Mike Connolly, leader of Bury Council, said: “Many young people are unsure what career they want to follow, or don’t know what opportunities are available to them. That’s why this event was invaluable, and it builds on our Backing Young Bury project to give more of our young people the right start to their working life.”
