Discover Bury’s heritage at three free events

Bury is taking part in national Heritage Open Day by holding three free events to show off some of the borough’s hidden gems.

The Tourist information Centre has organised the following:

  • Fusilier Tour of Bury - Thursday 8 September (10.30am to noon) from the Fusilier Museum, Moss Street, Bury.

In 1968 the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers inherited the proud traditions of the Lancashire Fusiliers including a special relationship with the people and town of Bury. That relationship, which started in 1873, was marked in 1947 by the granting to the Fusiliers of the Freedom of Bury and confirmed in 1968 by the transfer of the Freedom to the current regiment.Today, the story of this unique relationship is to be seen in physical form throughout Bury and the tour will seek out those buildings, monuments and public references to the Fusiliers that are part of the fabric of Bury illustrate this unique story.

  • St Anne’s Church, Tottington - Saturday 10 Sept (1pm to 1.45pm).

Join Hugh Bearn, vicar at St Anne’s Church in Tottington, for a guided walk around this Georgian place of worship. The church holds many historic tales from when it was built in 1799 (at a cost of £50) to the present day. Hear about its connections to William Wilberforce and also the Von Trapp family from the Sound of Music. From mid-century riots to flying bombs, there is plenty to intrigue you.

  • Bury Art Museum – Saturday10 Sept (2pm).

Celebrate the wonder that is Bury Art Museum with an authentic Edwardian tour of its fantastic collection and surroundings. Your host will be an Edwardian Museum guide who will give an animated talk on some of the treasures from the collection with a few surprises on the way.
