Full steam ahead towards the May elections

It’s full steam ahead in Bury – and not just because the Flying Scotsman is in town!

The local elections are held on Thursday 5 May, and Bury Council is urging residents to make sure they are on the electoral register in time to have a vote.

There will also be a referendum before the end of 2017 on the UK’s membership of the European Union.

The deadline to register to vote in the May elections is Monday 18 April.

Mike Owen, Bury’s returning officer and council chief executive, said: “Councillors make vital decisions on how important services are run in our borough, from parks and leisure to housing and education, transport and planning to fire and public safety, social care to waste management.

“If you’re not registered to vote, you can’t take part on polling day and you won’t be able to have your say.

“While the deadline is some time off, registering right now means that residents can take part in any by-election held before May and it could also improve their credit score. It only takes a few minutes to register online at www.gov.uk/registertovote and I would urge anyone who isn’t on the register to do so now.”
