‘Happy’ exhibition inspired by Victoria Wood opens next week

A new exhibition inspired by Victoria Wood marks the beginning of a year of ‘Happy’ events at Bury Art Museum.

Simply titled “Happy”, the display showcases contemporary and historical artworks designed to make you happy, make you question whether you are happy and question what it is to be happy anyway.

It will include a piece called ‘Dustbin Lid Kids’ by Graham Ibbeson, who is completing his designs for the memorial sculpture of Victoria Wood in Bury town centre.

The theme is inspired by a neon artwork that the BBC commissioned Victoria Wood to do, the word ‘Happy’ in her own handwriting.

The ‘Happy’ exhibition at Bury Art Museum runs from 17 February to 14 April. The museum is in Moss Street (opposite the transport Interchange) and is open from 10am to 5pm (Tuesday to Friday) and 10am to 4.30pm (Saturday).

There are also plans for Bury to host an exhibition devoted entirely to Victoria Wood’s life and career, to open in June this year.

BAFTA award winning comic Victoria Wood was born in Prestwich and attended Bury Grammar School for Girls. She was best known for her BBC sketch Acorn Antiques and the comedy Dinnerladies, and was one of the nation’s most respected and loved comedians. She died in April 2016 from cancer at the age of 62.
