High school students discover that Bury Means Business

The world of work came to students at Tottington High School who hosted the first Employers in Education session.

These new workshops, which are designed by the Bury Business Leadership Group, aim to promote the range of career options available with a focus on growth sectors and those which are struggling to recruit.

Year 10 students listened to Tim Rowbottom from the Department for Work and Pensions and from Elizabeth Clark, CEO of award-winning Ramsbottom tech company Dream Agility.They explained the demands of the regional labour market and the many routes into work, such as higher apprenticeships.

Councillor Rishi Shori, leader of Bury Council, said: “We want young people to be well informed about the many employment prospects locally, regionally and further afield. Sharing careers education, information and advice with students is key to supporting young people make important decisions in their early life.

“We have some fantastic local employers, who can inspire and raise the aspirations of our young people”.

Elizabeth Clark added: “I think this was a really promising start. It just shows that if we all come together, and with the help of the local council, then we can change the shape of education and help young people get into the work place without necessarily having huge student debts.”
