Hollins nature improvements thanks to Pitch funding

A range of improvements have been made to Hollins Nature Reserve after volunteers won council funding at The Pitch.

Members of Hollins Conservation Group, which recently celebrated its 20^th anniversary, have installed a new post, rail timber fence and kissing gates on a well-used path along the Lodge.

The work was carried out following a successful bid for £1,000 made by the group at the council’s The Pitch event held last July in Prestwich.

Paul Robinson, Local Nature Reserves officer, said: “The money has been used to make some well overdue and welcome improvements to the footpath network through the nature reserve. It has also presented an opportunity for members of the conservation group to learn new skills like installing timber kissing gates, footpath revetments and post and rail fencing.

“The money from The Pitch has re-invigorated the group, and we now have 15-20 members who regularly work on the nature reserve. Having money available allows us to plan and perform the necessary maintenance on our beautiful site.”

The group is now running a regular Thursday morning task, which anyone can come along and join in with, to plant bulbs, clear paths and litter pick, plus carrying out improvements to Hollins Village and the nature reserve.
