Just the ticket - recycling campaign to benefit Radcliffe schools

Two Radcliffe primary schools are set to benefit from the efforts that local residents make in recycling.

Recycle for Greater Manchester’s ‘Up and Forward’ project will bring rewards to St Mary’s RC and Gorsefield CP primaries – and the more that local householders recycle, the more they will gain for the schools.

Some 1,500 households near these schools will be given tickets in return for recycling in a scheme to be launched in September. Over an eight-week period, a recycling ticket will be tied to the handle of recycling bins that are put out for collection correctly and contain the correct items.  Households receiving a recycling ticket should hand it in at one of the schools or drop them off at a local collection point – Radcliffe Asda, Tesco Express, Radcliffe Library or Radcliffe Pool and Fitness Centre.

At the end of the eight-week period, all the tickets will be counted and each school will receive a reward relating to how many tickets have been collected.  The more tickets collected, the bigger the prize they will get.

The campaign, funded through Life+ Europe, is supporting Bury Council with improving recycling rates across the borough.

Councillor Tony Isherwood, cabinet member for environment, said: “We’ve made some tremendous progress over the last two years; our recycling rate has risen from 28% to 46%, and is now the third best in Greater Manchester. But we really need to reach our target of 50% or more.

“As a councillor in the Radcliffe area, I hope this scheme encourages my fellow residents and parents of pupils at St Mary’s and Gorsefield to do all they can to recycle, in the knowledge that their efforts will help the environment and their local schools.”   

Councillor Neil Swannick, chair of Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA), said: “This is a great opportunity for the residents in Radcliffe to get involved in a recycling project which will benefit local schools. We can make recycling in Bury an even bigger success, save significant sums of money by reducing waste to landfill and help protect the environment now and in the future.”

A number of events will be held in Radcliffe before September to promote the scheme and recycling generally, attended by officers from Bury Council and the Up and Forward Campaign.

The first is on Friday 28 June at St Mary’s Primary School’s Summer Fair, from 3.30pm to 6.30pm.
