Mums invited to coffee morning during World Breastfeeding Awareness Week

Mums and mums-to-be are invited to enjoy free coffee, cake and conversation at the Fusilier Museum Cafe in Bury on Tuesday 2 August (10-11.30am).

The event takes place during World Breastfeeding Awareness Week, and health visitors and staff from Bury Council’s Lifestyle and Helping Yourself to Wellbeing Service will be there to provide advice and support to mothers and their families.

The aim of the awareness week is to celebrate breastfeeding and to highlight the important role that breastfeeding plays in supporting a child’s health and wellbeing from the very start of its life.

The latest figures show that breastfeeding rates in Bury are improving, with 70% of new mums choosing to breastfeed after birth. However, many mums can find it difficult and there is still work to do to ensure that mums get the support they need to give their child the best start in life through breastfeeding.

Councillor Trevor Holt, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “Breastfeeding is one of the best things a mum can do for her baby. It not only has many benefits for baby’s health and development, but also helps build a strong connection between mum and baby that helps babies to thrive and grow into secure, happy children.

“Our coffee morning will be a fun and informal way for mums in Bury to get together, have a chat and share their breastfeeding experiences with other mums. I would encourage any mums-to-be who are considering breastfeeding to come along and have a chat with our health visitors. If you’re already breastfeeding your baby, you can find out a bit more about the information, advice and support available throughout the borough.”

Alternatively, parents can find a comprehensive range of advice on local support services by visiting the council’s Bury Directory at: www.theburydirectory.co.uk.
