Press release -

Ramsbottom recycling centre to close due to contamination and flytipping

Residents and businesses in the vicinity of Union Street, Ramsbottom are being advised by Bury Council that the recycling facility at this location is closing and will be removed on Thursday 11 December 2014.

The decision to close the site has been taken following repeated flytipping and contamination of the recycling bins, mostly by businesses trying to avoid waste disposal costs.

By law businesses should have contractual arrangements in place for the legitimate disposal of their waste.

Councillor Tony Isherwood, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Households across the borough now have kerbside recycling collections in place so we are confident that removal of this site isn’t going to be of major concern to residents.

“Sadly, users of this facility are constantly contaminating the bins meaning that the entire contents have to be disposed of instead of being recycled. At £283 per tonne, on average, this is costing us and our taxpayers hundreds of pounds each time the bins and the waste dumped next to them are cleared.

“Taking everything into consideration, the most sensible option is to close this site down.”

Businesses requiring advice on how to dispose of their waste lawfully should contact the Waste Management Service on 0161 253 6622.
