​Recycling: it’s worth it

Bury Council and Recycle for Greater Manchester are teaming up with Recycle Now this Recycle Week (Monday 25 Sep to Sunday 1 Oct) to encourage residents to look and feel good by recycling more bathroom items like empty deodorants and perfume bottles.

New Recycle Now research has revealed that bathroom items are evading the recycling bin with only around 52% actually being recycled in UK homes.

Bury recycling officers will be out and about during the week promoting recycling and offering helpful advice on what should be recycled in which bin. They will be giving out free kitchen caddies and food liners, (to help residents with recycling food waste), recipe cards to encourage the use of leftover food, and for businesses, advice will be available on commercial waste collections.

During Recycle Week, the council is also asking residents to rethink their bathroom routines by highlighting the benefits of recycling these items for Bury and demonstrating that what goes around comes around.

Aerosols such as deodorant and hairspray cans can be recycled again and again without any loss in quality, so they can come back in items such as mobile phones, washing machines or even as another aerosol can. That’s not all; if everyone in Bury recycled one more deodorant can, it would save enough energy to power a typical primary school for 67 days.

Councillor Nigel Murphy, chair of the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, said: “Research from Recycle Now found that over half (51%) of Greater Manchester’s population do not always recycle their aerosols including deodorant and hairspray cans from the bedroom or bathroom. By getting residents to add recycling to their bathroom routine, and recycling just a few more items from around the house can make a real difference.”
