Press release -

Remember - don’t lose your right to vote

Bury Council staff have begun calling at homes across Bury encouraging people to make sure that they are registered to vote.

Tens of thousands of letters have been delivered over the past three months asking residents to check that their correct details are on the Electoral Register. The majority of people have already responded, but there are still a number who have not.

Under the new system of Individual Electoral Registration, each person is required to confirm their own details. This replaces the old system, under which the ‘head of household’ would fill in the form on behalf of everyone living in a property.

Residents in Tottington are also being reminded to return their details by 5pm on Wednesday 7 October to ensure that they can vote in the by-election on 22 October.

Mike Owen, electoral registration officer for Bury, said: “Being on the Electoral Register ensures that you will have a vote in next year’s local elections and the proposed EU Referendum, if it is held in 2016. Registering to vote is quick and simple; you can even do it online, at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. It’s your vote - don’t lose it.”
