Press release -

The EU Referendum – your voting deadlines

Residents are reminded to make sure they are in good time to have their say in the EU Referendum on Thursday 23 June.

If you are already on the electoral register, you do not need to register separately for the referendum. You only need to re-register if you change your name, address or nationality.

If you are NOT already on the electoral register, you have until 7 June to join it in time for the EU vote. You can sign up www.gov.uk/registertovote or by calling 0161 253 5252 for a paper application form.

Mike Owen, returning officer for Bury, said: “We’re getting around 70 applications a day from people who are already registered to vote, but mistakenly think they need to register again for the EU Referendum. You don’t!”

Important deadlines for the referendum:

  • Tuesday 7 June - last day to register to vote
  • Wednesday 8 June, 5 pm - last day to apply for a postal vote
  • Wednesday 8 June, 5 pm - last day to cancel or make a change to an existing postal or proxy vote (cancellations must be made in writing, providing a signature to the address below)
  • Wednesday 15 June, 5 pm - last day to apply for a proxy vote
  • Thursday 23 June, 5 pm - last day to apply for an emergency proxy; please contact the electoral services team for more information

More information:

  • Poll cards will be sent out around 18 May
  • Postal votes to overseas addresses will be issued from 23 May
