Tonight’s vigil at Whitehead Gardens, Bury

A vigil to mark the tragic events at Manchester Arena will be held at 6pm tonight in Whitehead Gardens in Bury town centre.

The Mayor of Bury, Cllr Dorothy Gunther, will lead the vigil which will be held at the clock tower next to the town hall, and lay a wreath on behalf of all the borough’s citizens.

Council leader Rishi Shori will also speak at the event, called to remember those who lost their lives or were injured at the Ariana Grande concert.

Prayers will be said by the mayor’s chaplain, the Rev Hugh Bearn of St Anne’s Church, Tottington.

There will also be music, sung by pupils of St Gabriel’s High School Choir, and faith leaders will be there to light candles.

Cllr Shori said: “We stand beside Manchester in solidarity at this dreadful time, and offer our deepest sympathies to all the families and friends of those who suffered in Monday’s tragedy.

“I know that many people in Bury will wish to share their feelings, and we invite residents to attend tonight’s vigil in peace and remembrance. There will be a number of condolence books in the Gardens for people to sign, and visitors are also invited to lay flowers and tributes at the clock tower.”

NB: Knowsley Street, from Angouleme Way to Manchester Road, will be closed to through traffic between 5.30pm and 7pm during the holding of the vigil. Please follow diversion signs.
